In partnership with The Unpackaged Travel Company (ATOL 6195), I run a select number of wildlife holidays each year. These are based in some of the most spectacular locations around the globe, and draw on my experiences in the field.

2017 Adventures

The ULTIMATE East African Safari with Simon King OBE (Big Cat Diary, Toki’s Tale, Planet Earth)

22 October to 1 November 2017

Kenya is my birthplace. The sounds, scent and spectacle of this vast land found its way into my veins and have stayed with me ever since. Few places on earth can compare for wild drama and beauty. Join me to experience some of the magic of Kenya in this exclusive safari, visiting two of my favourite places in the country.

We start our adventure in the Masai Mara, in one of the exclusive conservancies which borders the National Reserve. Naboisho hosts all of the same natural drama as can be found in the main reserve, but with a much reduced human traffic thanks to its community led conservation initiatives. The magnificent exclusive (only 6 tents) Kicheche Valley Camp is in the heart of the bush, where the wildlife is all around. Luxury and comfort married with wilderness and dramatic wild creatures – a heady cocktail indeed! Here there are lion, leopard, cheetah and much more besides. Elephant roam the forest and plains nearby and the night air is punctuated with the voices of hyena and lion. Unlike the National Reserve, where activity is restricted to vehicle only safaris, here we are able to take walking safaris into the bush discovering some of the beauty and detail all too easily missed from the confines of the safari vehicle.

We move on to Ol Pejeta reserve in Laikipia, in the shadow of the mighty Mount Kenya. This is where I spent many months rehabilitating Toki, the orphaned cheetah cub, back into a self sufficient wild existence. Toki sadly has long since passed away, but Ol Pejeta boasts one of the highest predator densities in East Africa with several lion prides (over 70 lion in total), about 30 cheetah, leopard and, more recently, regular sightings of wild dogs including recent denning and breeding activity. This dry country environment also hosts a range of wildlife never seen in the Mara such as the striking and critically endangered Grevy’s Zebra, Oryx and a healthy and fiercely protected population of Black Rhino.

Wild Zambia with Simon King

Wednesday 11 October to Saturday 21 October 2017

The Nsefu sector is Simon’s favourite region of South Luangwa. It has very low numbers of human visitors but a huge wealth of wildlife. Simon has witnessed leopard, lion and wild dog kills in the open areas, and spectacular encounters with elephant, hippo, crocodile and the huge variety of birds that frequent the region. These include dazzling carmine bee eater colonies that nest in the high banks of the river – a sight and sound that stays with you for ever. These are some of the reasons he keeps returning to this destination to make films. This is also why he has chosen to share this spectacular wilderness with you.

Nsefu Camp, run by Robin Pope Safaris, has been Simon and his team’s base for film shoots in South Luangwa and he has come to know, admire and trust the staff and infrastructure there. The food is good, the service friendly and accommodating, the guides and scouts knowledgeable and the opportunity for adventure, ever present.

In addition to game drives, by day and night, to watch the great predators, elephants and other magical wildlife of the region you will have the opportunity to go on walking safaris and use purpose built hides – getting that little bit closer to the atmosphere and spirit of the place and its natural inhabitants. Your stay will be peppered with magical surprises that will make this a memorable and unique trip – whether you are a frequent visitor to the African continent or new to safaris.

Each of the six rondavels have double or twin beds, air conditioning and spacious en suite bathroom. Whilst comfy and well appointed, the accommodation retains a real sense of traditional safari values – simple elegance with the emphasis on the wild world outside.

Wild Dorset with Simon King

Saturday 3rd – Saturday 10th June 2017

The heaths, moors, marshes and woodland of the Isle of Purbeck and Jurassic Coast provide part of the stage for the 2017 Spring Safari, with Simon King.
Simon will take you on a journey of discovery into the secret corners of the county of Dorset, revealing some of the most charismatic and compelling of wild creatures in the nation.
The rare and elusive Dartford warbler, the dashing and mercurial hobby, enigmatic nightjar, sika and roe deer, smooth snakes, sand lizards and badgers, all are creatures of these southern wild places and we will hope to see most of them during our adventure and a great deal more besides.
We will be staying in the Springfield Country Hotel (complete with Spa and swimming pool) near Wareham Forest. The hotel’s location is ideal for access to many of the natural gems of Dorset, including the RSPB reserve at Arne, the rich marine and shore-life of Kimmeridge Bay plus the heaths, forests and marshes of the region. From the hotel, our small group (10 or fewer guests) will explore the area each day with Simon as your guide.
A visit to Brownsea Island which is home to one of the last populations of red squirrels in England, and an evening vigil to watch wild badgers coming out to feed will be part of the experience. We will offer trips at dusk and after dark to listen for nightjars and bats and Simon will share some of his unparalleled field craft skills and, for photography enthusiasts, offer hints and tips on how to develop your photographic techniques.
Dorset’s astonishing variety of habitats, from sea bird cliffs to lowland heaths and forests guarantee a wealth of wild surprises. Simon will ensure you have ringside seats for all of them.
Limited to 10 places only.
